MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- The Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team and head coach Jamey Newsome is pleased to announce the signing of Asta Einarsdottir and Arna Omarsdottir for the 2012 season.
Einarsdottir, a midfielder from Kopavogur, Iceland, and Omarsdottir, a defender/midfielder from Reykjavik, Iceland, have each spent the past year at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik.
"Both of these young ladies played in the premier league in Iceland and have a great deal of club experience," Newsome said. "Asta is a quick, play-making midfielder and Arna is a big, strong defender. They are both very technical players and add athleticism to our team. I think both have the potential to make an immediate impact on our team and compete for a starting spot. We are happy they chose AUM."
Despite from different hometowns in Iceland, Einarsdottir and Omarsdottir are not strangers, as each played for the club team Breiðablik, where they helped the team to the junior team championship in 2009 and 2010.
Einarsdottir was selected the club's player of the year in 2007 and selected the player with the most potential in Iceland in 2006. Omarsdottir was a team captain in 2010 and was selected the player of the year by her teammates the same season.
The daughter of Kristín Rut Haraldsdóttir and Einar Ingvarsson, Einarsdottir intends to major in psychology at AUM.
Omarsdottir anticipates pursuing a career in physical therapy. She is the daughter of Omar Torfason and Sigurlaug Hilmarsdottir.
The Warhawks will open the 2012 season on Saturday, August 25, when they host Bethel University at noon.
