NORCROSS, Ga. ---- The Southern States Athletic Conference announced its weekly men's soccer Player of the Week awards, and Auburn Montgomery freshman forward Agust Arnarson and junior goalkeeper Vignir Johannesson were each honored as the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.
Arnarson was recognized by the conference for the first time in his AUM career. He is the second Warhawk to receive the offensive award this season, joining sophomore midfielder Elvar Sigurdsson. Arnarson had two goals and an assist in AUM's 5-0 victory over Spring Hill in the first round of the SSAC tournament.
The two goals give him 11 on the season, which leads the team. He also now has five assists, which is tied for second-best on the team, and he leads the team with 27 points overall. Against Lee on Oct. 11, he became the only Warhawk this season to record a hat trick, leading AUM to a 3-2 overtime win.
Johannesson received the award for the third time this season, and fourth time in his two-year career at AUM. He made three saves in the victory over the Badgers, picking up his eighth shutout of the season. The eight clean sheets are the third-most in a season in AUM program history.
For the season, the Kopavogur, Iceland native now has a 12-3-2 record and a goals against average of only 1.14.
The men's soccer team returns to action in the SSAC semifinals against Southern Wesleyan on Thursday at approximately 7:30 p.m. The match will be held at the Emory Folmar Complex in Montgomery. General admission tickets are $5, while students can purchase tickets for $2.
