MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Auburn Montgomery senior forward LaKenya Drayton was named the fourth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2012-13 school year on Wednesday, for her efforts both on and off the court.
Drayton leads the undefeated Warhawks in points (18.1) and rebounds (8.6) per game. She has three double-doubles, including a 22 point, 11 rebound performance in a Nov. 16 win over No. 9 Lee. She had a season-high 23 points the following night against Southern Wesleyan. Dating back to last season, Drayton has scored in double figures for 15 straight games, with nine double-doubles in that stretch.
"Kenya exemplifies the type of player we want to have in our program," Head Coach Dan Davis said. "She works hard in the classroom, and leads by example on the floor. She has improved tremendously from where she was this time last year. It's been fun to watch the transformation, and everything that she has accomplished is solely because of her work ethic on and off the court."
One of three team captains on this year's squad, Drayton has joined the team in a variety of community service activities this semester. The Warhawks led this year's AUM blood drive for the Red Cross, participated in the nation's annual Make a Difference Day by reading to local children across Montgomery and helped with student move-in day at North Commons.
The Hephzibah, Ga., native also works hard in the classroom, earning a 3.0 grade-point average in the most recent spring semester. Drayton is majoring in criminal justice.
Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.
Junior men's soccer goalkeeper Vignir Johannesson, freshman men's soccer forward Agust Arnarson, senior women's soccer defender Inga Dis Juliusdottir and junior men's basketball guard LaRel Jackson were also nominated for this week's award.
