Women's Basketball - Mon. Jan. 07, 2013

NORCROSS, Ga. ---- Auburn Montgomery senior forward LaKenya Drayton was the first recipient of the Southern States Athletic Conference's women's basketball Player of the Week award for the 2012-13 season.

Drayton, who played a key role in keeping the Warhawks undefeated in the SSAC last weekend, is the first women's basketball player from AUM to receive the honor since Cassie Moore in February, 2010. She currently leads the Warhawks in points (15.1) and rebounds (7.6) per game.

"I'm happy for Kenya," Head Coach Dan Davis said. "The best part is that she could care less about this award. All she cares about is winning the day, whether it's in practice or in a game. She is such a team-oriented player. There's not a selfish bone in her body."

The Hephzibah, Ga., native has started all 16 games for AUM. She has scored in double figures in 14 of those games, and 22 of her last 24 overall. Last week, she averaged a team-high 17.7 points per game as the Warhawks went 2-1.

A 21 point, 12 rebound performance in a win over Brenau on Saturday highlighted the week. It was her team-leading fifth double-double of the season. The win moved the Warhawks to 6-0 in the conference (first in the SSAC west division), and 13-3 overall.

The SSAC will announce players of the week each Monday for the remainder of the regular season. The NAIA will then name national players of the week the following day. AUM returns to action this Saturday with a 2 p.m. home matchup against Faulkner.
