MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Daniel Farrar tossed six effective innings and Chad Mansmann drove in the go-ahead run to lead the Auburn Montgomery baseball team past Shawnee State 2-1 Sunday.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Bears fell to 2-5 overall.

"They say any win is a good win, but we are starting to get discouraged offensively," head coach Q.V. Lowe said. "We have to get things right. Pretty soon our pitching is going to collapse if we can't score a few runs for them. I am very pleased with the way our pitchers have responded the last few ball games. At the end of the day, I am proud of the team for gutting out a win, but we have to get better."

On the afternoon, AUM recorded just three hits, one each by Mansmann, Branden Kelley and Josh Thompson.

Mansmann delivered the key hit of the game, a run-scoring double in the third inning, which scored Wes Hughes. Hughes led off the frame by working a walk and later stole second. Following a pair of outs, Mansmann lined a double that sliced toward the left field line, plating Hughes and giving AUM a 2-1 advantage.

After falling behind 1-0 after the top half of the first inning, the Warhawks tied the score in the bottom of the frame on a RBI groundout by Blake Bearden. Thompson singled up the middle to start the rally and later swiped second base. Mansmann struck out on a breaking ball in the dirt, but on the throw to first base to complete the strikeout, Thompson was able to take third. Bearden followed with a slow-rolling ground ball to shortstop, which allowed Thompson to score.

Farrar was solid for AUM, scattering six hits and striking out five to earn his first win of the season. Farrar allowed consecutive singles in the first inning, following by a pair of groundouts to allow the lone run of the game.

Will Ruffin followed with 1 1/3 innings of relief, working around a pair of walks and a hit to hold the Bears scoreless. Britt Wilson struck out two in the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his second save of the year.

Nolan West suffered the loss for Shawnee State, allowing two runs in three innings. Jordan Williams followed with five scoreless innings of relief. Todd Queener led all players with three hits and scored the Bears only run.

AUM will return to the diamond on Friday, Feb. 15, when it opens Southern States Athletic Conference play by hosting Loyola University New Orleans at 4 p.m. The series will conclude with a doubleheader on Saturday, beginning at 12 p.m.
