
HATTIESBURG, Miss. ----- Sophomore Quay Davis scored a team-best 23 points, hitting his first seven 3-pointers of the game, but the Auburn Montgomery men's basketball team was unable to hold a lead during the final 13 minutes of the contest, as it fell to No. 11 William Carey 69-60 Thursday.
With the loss, the Warhawks fell to 12-13 on the season and 9-8 in Southern States Athletic Conference play, while the Crusaders improved to 23-4 overall and 16-2 in league games.
Davis finished the game 7-of-10 from distance and 8-of-14 from the field in the outing. He also added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals in 40 minutes of play. Junior LaRel Jackson also scored in double figures, netting 10 points and dishing out five assists. Reshad Bickham, the team's leading scorer heading into the contest, finished with eight point and eight rebounds. Chris Bell matched Bickham's eight rebounds.
After trailing by nine points at the intermission and 38-25 with 17:47 remaining in regulation, the Warhawks took the upper hand with a 14-0 run during next 2:01. Davis fueled the run with three treys, while Jackson added another.
AUM extended its lead to a game-high six points, 47-41, following a jumper by Bickham with 13:28 to play. However, the Crusaders regained the lead with 9:09 left in the game on a tip-in by Donzedrick Smith, making the score 55-53.
William Carey took the lead for good, 61-59, on a basket by Daron Bell with 4:42 remaining, before outscoring the Warhawks 8-1 down the stretch to provide the final margin.
For the game, AUM converted 44.9 percent of its shots from the field, including 11-of-20 from behind the arc. The Warhawks struggled from the free throw line, hitting just 5-of-15 attempts, while also committing 22 turnovers. The miscues led to a 21-12 advantage in points off turnovers for the Crusaders.
On the boards, the Warhawks were outrebounded 40-34, including 16-9 on the offensive glass.
Jeremiah Dunnings led all players with 24 points, while Smith and Kelvin Nixon combined for 23 points. Guy Payne grabbed a game-high nine rebounds.
AUM will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 23, when it hosts Loyola at 4 p.m. Prior the game, the Warhawks will recognize senior Michael Acoff for his contributions to the program.
