MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Auburn Montgomery sophomore third baseman Katie Spain was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Player of the Week today after leading the Warhawks to a doubleheader sweep of Talladega last Thursday.
The Whittier, Calif., native went 5 for 6 from the plate against the Tornadoes with two home runs, six RBIs and five runs scored. Most of her damage was done in the first game, where she went 3 for 4 with both homers and five RBIs.
The multi-homer game was the first of her career, and she became the first AUM player to hit two home runs in a game since Brandi Richards on Feb. 25, 2011. The three-hit game was the second of her career. She also added her first triple of the season. AUM defeated Talladega by scores of 10-5 and 10-1 to move to 4-0 on the season.
Spain is off to a scorching start for the Warhawks in 2013. She has eight hits in 12 at-bats with three home runs, 10 RBIs and seven runs scored. Her 1.667 slugging percentage is second-best in the NAIA, and she has also yet to commit an error in the field.
The SSAC votes on a Player and Pitcher of the Week each Monday during the regular season. This is the first time Spain has been recognized by the conference. She becomes the fifth player in AUM's five-year history to receive Player of the Week accolades.
The Warhawks return to action at home this Wednesday with a doubleheader against Point University. The first game begins at 4 p.m. at the AUM Softball Complex.
