KANSAS CITY, Mo. ---- The Auburn Montgomery men's tennis team claimed the top spot in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll released yesterday, jumping to No. 1 for the first time in almost four years.

The Warhawks (10-3) tallied 335 points and five first place votes in the poll, just edging No. 2 Embry-Riddle, which earned 333 points and five first place votes.

"It is a privilege to be ranked No. 1, and the team deserves it," head coach Rolando Vargas said. "The tough schedule and hard work are paying off. But at the end of the day, we have to keep working hard and focus on every match to go into Nationals in the best form possible."

AUM went 5-2 the two weeks since the latest poll release, going 4-0 against teams ranked in the NAIA top 25 and defeating one team (Rollins) ranked in the top 10 of NCAA Division II. The Warhawks only two losses were 5-4 nailbiters to Lynn and Barry, which are both ranked in the top five of D-II.

Vanguard remained in the third spot, and received the remaining three votes for the top position. Lindsey Wilson and Westmont continued to round out the top five.

William Carey (No. 6), Belhaven (No. 14) and Coastal Georgia (No. 21) joined AUM as representatives of the Southern States Athletic Conference in the poll. The Warhawks last came in at No. 1 on May 3, 2009.

AUM has received contributions from everyone on its roster this season, with all eight players currently holding at least a .667 winning percentage in singles. Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff and Othmane Lalami each have 11-1 records to lead AUM.

Pinones-Haltenhoff has defeated five nationally-ranked players, while Lalami has won eight straight. The doubles tandem of Pinones-Haltenhoff and Miguel Grifol also remains undefeated at 10-0.

AUM returns to the courts this Friday at 11th-ranked Cumberland University. The Tigers are currently 5-1 this season. Friday's matchup begins at 2 p.m.
