NORCROSS, Ga. ---- Auburn Montgomery freshman pitcher Taylor Powell was named the Southern States Athletic Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week today after registering a pair of victories over ranked opponents over the weekend.
The Alabaster, Ala., native surrendered only one earned run over 8 1/3 innings against No. 25 Spring Hill and No. 21 Mobile. She struck out 12 batters and walked three.
Powell pitched the first four innings of AUM's 11-0, five inning shutout win over the Badgers on Friday. She then went the first 4 1/3 innings of the Warhawks' 14-5, five inning triumph over the Rams the following day.
The two wins improved her season record to 9-0. Powell now has a 1.64 earned-run average over 49 1/3 innings. She has fanned 48 batters and limited opposing hitters to a .193 batting average.
Powell is the second Warhawk pitcher to be recognized by the SSAC this year, joining two-time winner Cassie Daniels. Jyssica Pepper and Katie Spain have also been named as SSAC Players of the Week this season.
The seventh-ranked Warhawks will take a 25-2 record (3-1 SSAC) into Tuesday's doubleheader against Faulkner. Game 1 is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
