MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Southern Poly's Tyler Roach drove in eight runs with a pair of home runs, as the Hornets took the opener of the Southern States Athletic Conference series against Auburn Montgomery 16-3 at the AUM Baseball Complex.
The Warhawks fell to 22-15 on the season and 9-10 in league play. The Hornets improved to 26-12 overall and 11-8 in SSAC play.
AUM finished with eight hits in the contest, scoring runs on a two-run pinch hit homer by Daniel Farrar in the seventh and a RBI single by Brett Wellman in the eighth. The Warhawks were also active on the base paths, as Chad Mansmann, Wes Hughes and Blake Bearden each stole two bases.
Will Ruffin (4-3) took the loss, allowing three on five hits in 1 2/3 innings. Patrick Devault followed with 3 2/3 innings of relief, before Matt Hand and Branden Kelley combined for two scoreless innings of relief. Erik Lawrence closed the game out by pitching the eighth inning.
Zach Smith (3-3) earned the victory for the Hornets, tossing six innings of four-hit ball, while striking out 12. John Butler allowed three runs over the final two innings to complete the win.
Roach did the majority of his damage late in the game, connecting on a three-run homer in the sixth inning, before adding a grand slam in the eighth inning.
As a team, the Hornets pounded out 20 hits, led by DeMarcus Tidwell and Reggie Weatherford with three each. Dalton Martinez led all players with three runs scored.
AUM and Southern Poly will conclude its series on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
