NORCROSS, Ga. ---- Auburn Montgomery sophomore Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff earned the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week award on Monday, receiving the honor for the third time this season.
Pinones-Haltenhoff was victorious in three of his four matches, as the Warhawks registered victories over NAIA No. 8 Xavier and NCAA Division I member New Orleans.
Against Xavier, Pinones-Haltenhoff picked up a 7-6, 6-0 win over Loic Didavi, who entered as the fifth-ranked singles player in the NAIA, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The Barcelona, Spain, native is now an impressive 7-1 on the season against ranked opponents. He improved to 15-1 in singles overall this year after a straight-sets victory over New Orleans' Ricardo Campos on Sunday.
Pinones-Haltenhoff and partner Miguel Grifol also rolled to an 8-0 win over the Privateers at the No. 3 doubles position, improving to 13-0 as a team. The tandem is ranked 23rd nationally by the ITA, while Pinones-Haltenhoff is the second-ranked singles player.
AUM has now won five of the eight SSAC player of the week awards in 2013, with Pinones-Haltenhoff and two-time winner Tim Hewitt accounting for all five accolades. Pinones-Haltenhoff received the honor for the fifth time in his one-plus years at AUM, and he has won five of the last 10 SSAC awards overall.
The top-ranked Warhawks (14-3) return to action at 11 a.m. Friday against Abilene Christian, which is currently ranked 19th in NCAA Division II. The match will be played in Mobile.
