MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- With Mobile's 4-3 victory over Belhaven this afternoon, the seventh-ranked Auburn Montgomery softball team clinched the top spot in the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division for the regular season.
The Warhawks (39-8, 17-7 SSAC) won the division for the first time since its creation three years ago. They will begin play in the conference tournament at 8 p.m. Thursday against the winner of Mobile/Southern Wesleyan.
Belhaven had an opportunity to pass AUM after sweeping Spring Hill yesterday. The Blazers needed another sweep this afternoon against the Rams, but dropped the opening game and will have to settle for the second seed.
AUM is in the midst of its best season in its five-year history. The Warhawks have been ranked in the top 10 of every NAIA Top 25 Coaches' poll this year, including a week spent in the top five back in March, and can clinch their second-straight 40-win season with a win on Thursday.
The SSAC tournament takes place Thursday through Saturday in Columbus, Ga., with the two finalists clinching automatic berths to the NAIA national tournament.
