COLUMBUS, Ga. ------ Chad Mansmann had a pair of hits and four pitchers combined to surrender just one earned run, but the Auburn Montgomery baseball team dropped its final pool play game of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament 4-1 to Southern Poly at Golden Park.
The Warhawks (32-24-1) finished pool play with 0-3 record. Second-ranked Faulkner won Pool A and will take on No. 3 Lee in a winner-take-all single game on Saturday at 1 p.m.
In the contest against the Hornets (39-18), AUM committed three key errors, including one with two outs in a three-run third inning for Southern Poly. Following a fielding error by Blake Bearden, the Hornets put together four consecutive hits, including a two-run single by Tyler Roach.
Roach drove in another run in the fifth inning to extend the AUM deficit to 4-0, driving in Blake Barber with a single up the middle.
The Warhawks had opportunities to stay close, as they stranded eight runners on base in the game. AUM left three runners on base in the top of the first inning when it loaded the bases with one out, but could not push across a run.
Chad Reeves (5-4) took the loss after allowing the three unearned runs in three innings of work. Nathan Taylor and Patrick Devault followed with two innings each, before Eran Franks closed the game with a scoreless ninth.
Zach Smith (7-3) and Nick Blount combined to scatter just four hits in the victory for Southern Poly, striking out 11, including six by Blount in three innings of work as he earned his eighth save of the season.
Along with the two hits, Mansmann also stole three bases and scored the lone run of the game for the Warhawks. Josh Thompson and Hayden Hillyer also had hits.
Roach finished the contest 2 for 3 with three runs batted in to lead the Hornets.
