MONTGOMERY, Ala. ----- Auburn University at Montgomery freshman cross country standout Adam Russell was selected the fifth recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2011-12 school year on Monday, for his efforts both on and off the course.

Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.

In his first season, Russell paced the Warhawks in all six meets this season, holding the school record in the 5K and the top three times in the 8K distance. During the period for which he was nominated, Russell established the best time in the program's young history at the Southeast Cross Country Classic, hosted by Berry College, where he posted a time of 31:52. Two weeks later, he finished 68th at the Southern States Athletic Conference Championships with a time of 31:58.

"Adam's drive to succeed is contagious to his teammates," head coach Michael Gross said. "His hard work at practice helps drive the competitiveness during workouts. He has a great personality and sense of humor that adds to a positive team attitude."

In addition to his success as an athlete, Russell has also become active at the Baptist Campus Ministries on campus and is helping in the intramural program. He is currently majoring in post-secondary education and biology.
