CLEVELAND, Ga. ---- Four players scored in double figures to help the Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball team erase a 13-point first half deficit, as the Warhawks earned a 74-70 road victory at Truett-McConnell and snap an eight-game skid Saturday.
With the win, the Warhawks improved to 3-10 on the season and picked up their first Southern States Athletic Conference victory in the process. The Bears fell to 8-8 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Sophomore Marquez Brooks paced AUM with 15 points, while senior Alex Hergott added 14 points off the bench. Freshman Trey Geter chipped in 13 points and senior Michael Lee finished with 11 points.
For the game, the Warhawks converted 24-of-56 shots from the field, including eight 3-pointers. AUM also finished 18-of-22 from the charity stripe. Truett-McConnell shot 41.3 percent from the floor for the game.
Senior Stephen Jordan led the Warhawks with seven rebounds, though the team was outrebounded 37-33 in the contest. Geter added six rebounds, while freshman Justin Zachary chipped in five rebounds from the guard position. Zachary also finished with a team-best four assists and two steals.
Early in the first half, neither team was able to gain the advantage. Tied at 17-17 with 13:11 remaining in the period, the Bears took the games largest lead with a 15-2 spurt during the next 4:41.
Despite the deficit, the Warhawks closed the half with a 21-9, behind three 3-pointers by Brooks to tie the score at the intermission at 40-40.
The second half remained close in the opening four minutes, but AUM pulled ahead with five straight and 14 of the next 18 to take a 10-point lead, 63-53, with 13:20 remaining in the game on a pair of free throws by Zachary.
The advantage was short lived, as the Bears answered with a 10-0 run, tying the score with 11:49 remaining.
The Warhawks held an advantage for nearly all the remainder of the game, but found themselves behind 70-68 with 4:17 following a trey by Roderick Bombard. However, AUM had one final run remaining, as it closed the game with the final six points to provide the final margin.
Bombard led all players with 19 points in the game, while Anthoney Dorsey finished with 18 points. Bernard Niugent added 17 points and eight assists.
AUM will return to action on Thursday, Jan. 12, when it travels to Jackson, Miss., to take on Belhaven at 7:30 p.m.
