MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Freshman Cameron Pridemore sank a game-winning jumper as time expired in overtime to lead the Auburn University at Montgomery past Mobile, 57-56, Thursday at the AUM Physical Education Complex.
Pridemore finished with 10 points off the bench for AUM (5-12, 2-7 SSAC), five of which came in the final 42 seconds of overtime to erase a four-point lead by the Rams (8-11, 4-5 SSAC).
"This is a real confidence booster to our team and to me personally," Pridemore said. "Right now, we don't have the record we would like, but it seems like we have a little momentum after this game and Monday's. I am really happy to have had a chance to help the team and was glad that final shot fell."
Joining Pridemore in double figures was sophomore Marquez Brooks, who finished with a game-high 17 points. Senior Stephen Jordan added 10 points and seven rebounds in the victory. Fellow senior Alex Hergott added just two points, but a team-leading nine rebounds, including five on the offensive end.
For the game, the Warhawks held a 42-38 advantage on the boards, despite 19 rebounds by Antonio Hester. Hester added a game-high 21 points for the Rams, while Ji Kimbrough chipped in 18 points.
Mobile raced out of the gates in the contest, scoring the first 12 points during the opening 9:12 of the game. Senior Michael Lee put the Warhawks on the board at the 10:37 mark of the half with a jumper, giving the team momentum. By halftime, AUM trimmed the deficit to just four points, 22-18.
The Rams began the second half with six of the first eight points to push their lead to 28-20 with 16:37 remaining in regulation. Despite the fury to start the period, the Warhawks stormed back to tie the game at 34-34 with 12:46 remaining on a lay-in by Jordan. Mobile again had an answer, scoring 11 straight to open up a 45-34 advantage, capped by a Brock Dockery trey.
AUM chipped away at the deficit, posting an 8-0 run during a 3:29 span late in the second half, with freshman Trey Jeter tying the game on a lay-in at 47-47 with 2:08 left in regulation.
Mobile controlled the overtime period, leading the entire stanza until the game-winning shot by Pridemore.
"I think tonight's game showed the fight in this team," head coach Larry Chapman said. "Even in overtime, we never had the momentum on our side. I was really proud of the way they battled and never gave up. Cameron made a really tough shot at the end to really and of course we are happy for him and for all of our players."
For the game, the Warhawks converted 20-of-55 shots (36.4 percent), despite hitting just 25.9 percent in the opening half. The Warhawks committed 17 turnovers, while forcing 13 by the Rams.
"I think the cheerleaders and the section of students really had an impact on tonight's game," Chapman said of the crowd. "They created an atmosphere that was at times overwhelming and that is something we have been lacking. I think that was a big factor and hope our student body will continue to support our athletic programs. I know our players, our athletic staff and I all appreciate their efforts tonight."
AUM will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 21, when it travels to Hattiesburg, Miss., to take on William Carey. Tip-off is slated for 4 p.m.
