LIVINGSTON, Ala. ---- The Auburn University at Montgomery men's basketball could not maintain an eight-point lead in the final six minutes of the contest, as West Alabama rallied to earn a two-point victory, 72-70, Wednesday over the Warhawks.
The Warhawks (5-14) took a 61-53 advantage in the game with 5:53 remaining on a dunk by sophomore A.J. Ansley, but the Tigers (6-13) outscored AUM 19-9 down the stretch to earn the victory. UWA's Steven Samuel's gave the team the lead for good with a pair of free throws with 2:26 remaining.
Four players scored in double figures for the Warhawks, led by senior Alex Hergott's game-high 20 points. Fellow senior Michael Lee and sophomore Marquez Brooks each added 13 points, while freshman Trey Geter chipped in 12 points.
For the game, AUM converted 49.2 percent of its shots from the floor, including six 3-pointers. The Warhawks also knocked down 6-of-7 free throw attempts.
The Tigers also shot well for the game, hitting 50 percent of their shots from the field. West Alabama connected on 12 3-point baskets in the win.
Turnovers also played a key factor in the game, as the two teams combined for 45 miscues. AUM turned the ball over 21 times, but turned 24 Tiger turnovers into 36 points.
On the glass, each team pulled down 29 rebounds, with Ansley and Hergott leading the Warhawks with five each. Samuels led all players with six boards and added a game-high nine assists.
The Tigers had all five starters score in double figures, led by Jared Woolfolk's 19 points. West Alabama received only two points in the game from its bench.
AUM will look to bounce back on Saturday, Jan. 28, when it travels to New Orleans to take on Loyola University. Tip-off against the Wolfpack is slated for 4 p.m.
