PANAMA CITY, Fla. ----- Following the completion of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic, Auburn University at Montgomery senior Brandi Richards and sophomore Jyssica Pepper were voted to the All-Tournament Team, the organization announced Monday.
The duo helped the No. 13 Warhawks to a 4-1 record in the tournament, including shutout victories over Martin Methodist, Notre Dame College and Bellevue.
For the weekend, Richards posted a .286 batting average with a double, a triple, a run scored and a run batted in. She was also a force in the circle, where she posted a 1-1 record with a 1.38 earned run average. Richards struck out 15, allowed only seven hits and walked just one in 13.0 innings pitched.
On the season, the Covington, Ga., native sports a 2-3 record, but has an ERA of 1.32 and has struck out 50 hitters in just 34.0 innings. Opponents are hitting only .158 against her and she has completed all five games she has appeared in. She is also hitting .323 and it tied for the team lead with nine runs batted in.
Pepper paced the offense, finishing 6-for-14 at the plate in five games. She recorded three doubles, scored four runs and walked four times, while adding a pair of stolen bases and a RBI. Overall, the Madison, Ala., native leads the team with a .417 batting average, 13 runs scored, 11 walks and six doubles. She has added a pair of triples and has an on-base percentage of .563.
No. 4 Central Baptist's Kira Bonner was selected the tournament's Most Valuable Player, while the Lady Mustangs' Jessica Bock was voted Most Valuable Pitcher. Bonner finished the weekend 11-for-17 at the plate, with three home runs, a triple, eight RBIs, nine runs scored and two stolen bases. Bock posted four victories in helping CBC to the tournament championship.
Additional members of the All-Tournament Team included Central Baptist's Erica Gunter and Jessica Sheldon, Casey Alexander, Hannah Cook-Kelley and Alli McCaleb from William Carey, Brittany Ballough, Kelsey Barnes and Anna Coscorrosa of Lee, Ashley Kennedy of Reinhardt and Amy Madden from Southern Nazarene.
AUM will return to action on Tuesday, when it hosts Belhaven in each team's Southern States Athletic Conference opener at 3 p.m. Prior to the contest, the athletic department will hold an official ribbon cutting and reception to celebrate the addition of the new press box and lighting system at the AUM Softball Complex. The grand opening is slated to begin at 2 p.m.
