The No. 17-ranked Senators fell to Shorter University, 3-1, on Friday
Men's Soccer - Fri. Aug. 27, 2010
MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Shorter scored a pair of first-half goals which proved to be too much to overcome, as the No. 17 Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team fell, 3-1, in its opening match of the AUM Fall Kickoff Classic on Friday.

The loss dropped the Senators to 1-1 on the season, while the Hawks improved to 1-0 overall.

"This loss is very disappointing," head coach Wulf-Dieter Koch said. "We just played 90 minutes and managed to only play 10 minutes of good soccer. We scored a goal and were competitive in those 10 minutes, but then seemed to lose interest. I was just really disappointed by our play."

The Senators fell behind after less than 10 minutes of play, when Adrian Burns scored his first of two goals off of a deflected save by AUM junior Steve Keller.

Ryan Mcqourik pushed the Hawks' advantaged to 2-0 in the 36th minute, after taking a pass from Garry Perks to score his first goal of the season.

Trailing 2-0, the Senators cut the deficit in half following the first collegiate goal from freshman Daniel Rodrigues. After senior co-captain Stefan Arnarson hit the post with a shot just seconds earlier, Rodrigues slammed a strike past Shorter keeper Marcus Stallechner to make the score 2-1.

Burns added a late insurance goal in the 88th minute to provide the final margin.

In the contest, each team recorded 18 shots, with the Hawks landing 11 on goal, compared to just six for the Senators. Arnarson and sophomore Tornubari Nyonebue each posted five shots to pace AUM.

In goal, Keller stopped seven shots, including several one-on-one attempts.

AUM will return to action on Sunday, when it hosts Graceland University at 3 p.m.
