MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The No. 13-ranked Auburn University at Montgomery women's soccer team opened its 2010 season with an 8-0 defeat of conference foe Brewton-Parker at AUM Soccer Complex to start off the AUM Kick-Off Classic on Friday.

With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 1-0 on the season and gave head coach Jamey Newsome his first win as a collegiate head coach.

"I'm proud of the effort that everyone contributed, including the players that came off the bench," said Newsome. "It was a team effort, and that is reflected in the goal scoring. The goals are spread out over several players and that is just fantastic."

Junior Kristen Mitchell led the Lady Senators with three goals and six points, including the team's first goal just 4:53 into the season. Last season, in two matches against Brewton-Parker, Mitchell led the team with four goals.

"Kristen Mitchell was blessed with some pretty good speed, and it was obvious that she took advantage with today," continued Coach Newsome. "She was confident, aggressive in the box, and I'm certainly proud of her."

Along with Mitchell, sophomore Alexandra Tomasdottir added two goals, while senior Amber Elam and juniors Heather Welch and Jana Yates, rounded out the scoring the for the Lady Senators with a goal apiece.

Several bench players contributed to the successful win and made their AUM débuts, including both back-up goalkeepers Margret Ingthorsdottir and Chelsea Heinen. Sophomore Inga Dis Juliusdottir, an all-conference performer last season, also came off the bench and recorded an assist.

AUM started off strong and did not let up, scoring four goals in each half and totaling 48 shots. The Lady Senators defense also limited the Lady Barons to just one shot in the contest.

"It was great to open up the season that way and hopefully we can gain some confidence heading into tomorrow," said Newsome.

The Senators now prepare to finish out the AUM Kick-Off Tournament against Shorter University, Saturday at 3 p.m.
