Men's Tennis - Tue. May. 08, 2012
KANSAS CITY, Mo. ----- The No. 5 Auburn University at Montgomery men's tennis team has earned a bye in the opening round of the NAIA Men's Tennis National Championships, the national office announced today when they released the tournament bracket.

The Warhawks (16-7), who will play their first match of the tournament Wednesday at 1 p.m., will await the winner of Tuesday's opening round match between Asbury (Ky.) and Concordia (Calif.). Asbury (14-6) earned its invitation to the tournament by winning the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship, while Concordia captured the sixth of 10 at-large berths.

AUM is in the field for the 12th time and is seeking their 10th national championship. No other team has more than two championships. Since the NAIA went to a team head-to-head format in 2000, the Warhawks sport a 36-5 record in the tournament.

Led by Southern States Athletic Conference Player of the Year Nicolas Pinones-Haltenhoff, the Warhawks sport a line-up filled with all-conference performers, as all six singles players were honored. Sophomore Zinelabidine Jouini paces the team with 20 singles victories from his No. 5 singles spot, while also adding 16 doubles victories. On the season, four Warhawks, Jouini, Pinones-Haltenhoff, Marlu Jansen Van Vuuren and Josh Reason, have posted 15 or more victories in singles matches, with Bence Toth adding 14. Matias Dasso has recorded seven singles victories, while chipping in 10 doubles wins.

The single elimination, head-to-head tournament will commence with eight first-round matchups on May 15 starting at 1 p.m. The top-eight seeds received a first-round bye and will begin action on May 16 at 1 p.m. The event culminates on May 19 with the championship final slated for 2 p.m.
