CENTRAL, S.C. ---- Junior Taian Souza netted the game-winning goal with 12:49 to play in regulation, as the No. 3 Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer team rallied from a halftime deficit for a 2-1 victory at Southern Wesleyan Saturday.

With the win, the Warhawks improved to 6-1-1 on the season and 2-0 in Southern States Athletic Conference play. The Warriors, who were receiving votes in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, fell to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in league play.

"I think we showed a little character today after battling back from a halftime deficit," head coach Wulf Koch said. "Even in the first half, we possessed the ball well, but could not finish when we needed. Give Southern Wesleyan a lot of credit though. They were an undefeated team that came ready to play and gave us some problems with their pace. In the end, I think we were able to get contributions from everyone on the team and were able to rally around each other and earn the victory."

After falling behind 1-0 in the opening 8:01 of the match, the Warhawks settled down and kept the Warriors off the board for the remainder of the game.

Junior Baron Watson put AUM on the board and tied the game with his first goal of the season in the 49th minute.

The Warhawks were able to take the lead later in the half, when Souza also notched his first goal of the season to put the momentum in AUM's favor.

Junior goalkeeper Vignir Johannesson and the Warhawks' defense slammed the door in the final 12-plus minutes, as Johannesson stopped both shots he faced and AUM allowed only three shots for the remainder of the match.

For the match, the Warhawks held a 16-12 advantage in total shots, with Johannesson stopping three of the Warriors' shots on goal. Sophomore Elvar Sigurdsson led all players with five shots for AUM.

The Warhawks will return to action on Friday, September 28, when they host Brewton-Parker at 3:30 p.m.
