Women's Basketball - Thu. Oct. 18, 2012

MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Eighty-three runners competed in the 13th annual Warhawk Challenge last Saturday, hosted each fall by the Auburn Montgomery women's basketball team. Seventeen-year-olds Mike Bulger and Megan Hawkins finished as the top-ranked male and female runners in the event.

"It was great to see so many returning runners and familiar faces," Head Coach Dan Davis said. "The Warhawk Challenge is something we look forward to every year. We thank everybody for their help and contributions. We raised close to $2,500, which will really help our program."

Bulger was the top finisher overall, completing the 5K race in a time of 17:46. His brother, 15-year-old Brendon Bulger, came in second, running the course in 18:37. The siblings were the only two to run the race at a sub-six mile pace.

Hawkins finished 11th overall after posting a time of 21:41. Sara Allen, a student at AUM, was the second female finisher, coming in 12th place at 21:54.

Seven runners completed the course in less than 20 minutes. Gary Davidson was the youngest competitor in the field. The 12-year-old finished in the top 20 overall with a time of 22:57.

West Marcus, who at 73-years-old was the oldest runner in the field, ran the race in 31:52.

Several AUM faculty and staff members competed in the event, including: Top-10 finishers Dr. Kevin Banning (Associate Professor and Head of the Management Department) and Dr. George Schaefer (Assistant Professor in the Department of Physical Education & Exercise Science), Dr. Mike Esco (Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Education & Exercise Science), Louis Thornton (Director of the Wellness Center), Michelle Crompton (Athletic Administration Graduate Assistant) and LTC. Bryon Bonnell (Professor of Military Studies). Former women's basketball players Candace Dyer and Melanie Gess also participated.

All proceeds from the event went to the women's basketball program.
