HARDEEVILLE, S.C. ---- It was a fantastic weekend for the Auburn Montgomery cross country teams, with 10 of the 12 competing runners setting personal best times at the Sand Shark Invitational, hosted by USC-Beaufort.
Garrett Carr and Katherine Toy led the way for AUM, with both setting new school records in their distance. Carr was one of three Warhawks to finish below the previous AUM 8K record of 28:35.48. Toy became only the second female runner to break 21 minutes in the 5K.
"I'm very excited for everybody," Head Coach Michael Gross said. "Almost everybody set personal records today, which is great. The biggest thing is that it's good for their morale as we head into the conference tournament in a couple of weeks."
Carr's time of 27:48.67 was good enough for 70th place out of the 151 participating runners. Zach Sollie also broke 28 minutes for the first time, finishing in 72nd with a 27:54.90. Senior Ryan Schwarzman was the third Warhawk to finish below the previous top mark, coming in 75th with a time of 28:14.50.
Andrew Russell (29:16.32, 99th) and Shaw Cornelius (30:07.19, 116th) were the other scoring runners. Both set personal bests, with Cornelius taking over a minute off his previous top result.
Sophomore Adam Russell also set a new career best, finishing in 129th after completing the course in 31:42.50. Aaron West ran his second fastest time, placing 142nd with a 33:57.15.
The men finished 13th out of 16 in the team standings. Embry-Riddle finished first overall, and Eagle runner Evans Kirwa (24:05.21) was the fastest individual runner.
On the women's side, Toy finished with a time of 20:40.21, putting her in 53rd place out of 141 runners. The time was 16 seconds faster than Rachel Cunningham's previous school record.
Freshman Raquel Anecito (23:14.41, 104th) and senior Areial Woods (25:38.18, 124th) both took over a minute off their previous personal bests.
Jordan Holley (27:17.44, 135th) and Stephanie Torrence (28:01.72, 138th) were AUM's other scoring runners. Holley ran her fastest time of the 2012 season, while Torrence took over two minutes off her previous best result.
As a team, the Warhawk women finished in 16th place. Embry-Riddle once again swept the team and individual standings. Eagle runner Ellie Staker (17:18.32) was the fastest individual runner.
The cross country regular season will conclude in two weeks. The teams will look to build on this week's momentum and finish with a strong showing at the Southern States Athletic Conference Championship, held at Choctaw Trails in Clinton, Miss. The meet begins at 9 a.m. on November 3.
