MONTGOMERY, Ala. ---- Auburn Montgomery sophomore midfielder Elvar Sigurdsson was named the third recipient of the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award for the 2012-13 school year on Thursday, for his efforts both on and off the field.

Sigurdsson has been a huge part of the fifth-ranked men's soccer team's success this season. One of only five Warhawks to appear in all 17 games this season, he leads the team in goals (9), points (22) and shots (65). Three of those goals have been game winners.

"Elvar has a great work ethic, both in games and during training," Head Coach Wulf Koch said. "He plays very fair, he has no cards this season, and you will never hear him complain. He is a great person, a superb student and a very good player."

When he is not fulfilling his responsibilities to the soccer team, Sigurdsson spends his free time volunteering with local youth soccer clinics. Earlier this semester, he joined his teammates in assisting with AUM move-in day.

The Kopavogur, Iceland native also works hard in the classroom. A biology major, he has an outstanding cumulative grade-point average of 3.76.

Criteria for the Army ROTC Athletic Achievement Award includes being certified for eligibility and involved in participation of a varsity sport; performance on the field or court during the previous two weeks; contributions to the team's success through their individual leadership skills, their commitment to teamwork, their extra effort during practice and their demonstration of sportsmanship; and performance off the field of play, including academic success, character and exemplary community outreach.

Sophomore women's soccer midfielder Krista Hagen, senior women's cross country runner Katherine Toy and freshman men's cross country runner Garrett Carr were also nominated for this week's award.
