SAAC

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a primary avenue of communication between student-athletes, the University, and Athletics Administration. The SAAC provides a forum in which student-athletes and Athletics Department leadership can discuss openly issues relevant to intercollegiate athletics including student-athlete welfare. The SAAC group consists of a diverse representation of two representatives from each institutional sport and cheerleading.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE SPORTSMANSHIP STATEMENT
At AUM, we display sportsmanship by acting with respect and integrity. We are committed to providing our fans and visitors with a hospitable environment, as would be expected when we are visitors. For this reason, we have zero tolerance of unsportsmanlike conduct from any student athlete, coach, or AUM personnel because the behavior of these representatives reflects AUM, our teams, and AUM Athletics. It should be the goal of all persons associated with Auburn University at Montgomery to place the integrity and values of our University ahead of everything else. Therefore, we expect nothing but greatness from our representatives because our standard is excellence and our goal is to be GREAT!

Sportsmanlike Conduct Policy: It shall be the responsibility of all athletes, coaches, and University personnel to ensure that all individuals directly associated with the athletic program to conduct themselves in a sportsmanlike manner in the classroom, on campus, at community engagement activities, and at intercollegiate athletic events. Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated, and shall subject the individual to any disciplinary action necessary. In the event the individual feels that the penalty is inappropriate, either because the violation did not occur or because the penalty is excessive, there shall be the right to appeal through the institutions stated system of appeal.

Below is the constitution for the AUM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

Constitution of Auburn University at Montgomery Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

 

Article I

Name

The name of the organization shall be the AUM Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

 

Article II

Purpose

Purpose 1: To facilitate and promote efficient communication between the administration and the student-athletes to better serve their needs. To make recommendations on programs designed to serve these needs.

Purpose 2: To encourage increased involvement of the student-athletes in campus and community projects.

Purpose 3: To promote increased communication between intercollegiate teams.

Purpose 4: To design and provide programs which will encourage academic achievement, health promotion, social responsibility, leadership skills, and general awareness.  To support and encourage graduation.

Purpose 5: To Promote an understanding of the role of the NAIA student-athlete.

Purpose 6: To Promote an atmosphere within the department and the Southern States Athletic Conference that encourages and welcomes unity among all student-athletes.

 

Article III

Membership

Section 1: Eligibility

  • This organization does not discriminate in the selection of members or appointments when discrimination is defined as denying individuals membership on the basis of a person's age, race, national origin, color, gender, creed, handicap, or place of residence.
  • All members shall be full-time student-athletes.
  • Membership will include two representatives from each varsity sport and cheerleading.  All members will serve a one year term and may be re-elected.

Section 2: Methods of Selecting Members

  • Committee shall consist of a diverse representation of two representatives from each institutional sport and cheerleading. The Athletic Director and one member of the athletic department will be represented on the committee.
  • Committee representatives should be appointed by their respective coach based upon team members' recommendation.
 

Article IV

Responsibilities

Section 1: Duties

  • Attend all Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meetings.
  • Represent the team's view in committee meetings.  Keep the team apprised of current issues and communicate the team's views to the committee.
  • Encourage the team members to assist with any projects deemed significant by the Committee.
  

Article V

Officers

Section 1: List of Officers

  • The Committee shall elect one President and one Vice President.

Section 2: Powers and Duties

  • President:  The President shall preside over all Committee meetings and communicate regularly with the Athletic Director and athletic intern.
  • Vice President:  The Vice President shall preside at Committee meetings in the absence of the President.The Vice President shall be responsible for keeping and distributing minutes as well as helping to present the meeting agenda.

Section 3: Election

  • The appointment of the President and Vice President shall be determined by the Committee with the approval from the Athletic Director.

Section 4: Vacancies

  • The Vice President shall assume the position of President upon the vacancy of this seat.The Committee shall elect a new Vice President upon vacancy of this seat.
  • The specific team will recommend a replacement to their coach for any member no longer representing that program.

Section 5:Impeachment Proceedings

  • If a President or Vice President is to be removed from their position, the Committee must have a majority two-thirds vote to remove an officer. Any impeachment must be reviewed by the Athletic Director.
 

Article VI

Organizational Structure

Section 1: Meetings

  • The Committee shall meet once a month or as necessary.
  • It will be the responsibility of the President and Vice President to work jointly in scheduling and planning the meeting agenda with consultation from the Athletic Director.
  • The President may call a special meeting as the need develops.

Section 2: Special Committees

  • If necessary the Committee will establish special committees to study an issue at its own discretion.
  • The head of the Committee will report updates to the President or Vice President and make a report to the Committee each month or until issue is resolved.
 

Article VII

Rules of Procedure

Section 1: Voting

  • Each representative shall have one vote.

Section 2: Attendance Policy

  • Attendance is mandatory.  Upon accumulating two consecutive unexcused absences in a semester, members shall be suspended from membership for the remainder of that semester.Membership shall be-re-established the following semester upon approval of a majority of the Committee members.
  • Any member with three unexcused absences in a year will be removed from the Committee.Their removal from the Committee must be reviewed by the Athletic Director.
    • 1st Unexcused Absence:  Email warning sent out to the student-athlete and the student-athlete's coach.
    • 2nd Unexcused Absence:  Email warning sent out to the student-athlete and the student-athlete's coach.  Representative will be suspended for remainder or term.  A ten dollar (10) fine will be deducted out of the student-athlete's sport budget.
    • 3rd Unexcused Absence:  Email sent out to student-athlete and student-athlete's coach notifying removal from Committee.

Section 3: Frequency of Meetings

  • The Committee shall meet once a month or as deemed necessary by the President.

Section 4: Quorum

  • Two-thirds vote of the existing Committee
 

Article VIII

Finance

Section 1: Funding

  • Financial needs and issues will be handled by the officers of the Committee and the Athletic Director.
