Jamey Newsome is entering his inaugural season as the head coach of the Auburn Montgomery women's soccer program. In light of the coaching change, Newsome has high hopes for the upcoming season as he will try to add to the success the Lady Senators enjoyed last season.
"Coach Newsome has been hired to lead our women's soccer program to the next level of achievement. Jamey has extensive experience and contacts within the southeast regional club setting. It was important that AUM continue the focus on the development of the total person within our women's soccer program and I am confident we have found that individual in Coach Newsome," said Athletic Director Steve Crotz. "Throughout his 15 years of coaching experience, he has demonstrated a commitment to excellence in the classroom and on the field of competition. It was important to build on our recent success in the women's soccer program, while maintaining the high academic standards and community involvement expectations for our program. I am confident that Coach Newsome is the perfect fit to guide our program to the next level."
Prior to being named the fifth head coach of the women's soccer team, Newsome was most recently at Georgia Southern University where he has spent three years as an assistant coach for the women's team. While at GSU, Newsome assisted the head coach in various areas of coaching, recruiting and video analysis.
Newsome began his collegiate coaching experience in 1999 as an assistant coach for the men's soccer program at the University of South Carolina Upstate, where they finished 12-3-3 and were able to obtain the #16 rank nationally. While at Upstate, Newsome was primarily involved in recruiting, player training and scheduling.
Newsome has also been involved with the Coweta Cannons Soccer Club in Newnan, Ga., as the Technical Director from 2001-03 and the Director of Coaching from '03-'04. Most recently, from '05-'07, he was the Assistant Director of the Darlington School Soccer Academy of Rome, Ga., where his duties included training, marketing, event planning and monitoring boarding students.
Since 2006, Newsome has been involved with the Olympic Development Program in the development of Georgia's rising soccer talent through the Georgia State Soccer Association. He also currently holds the United States Soccer Federation "B" License and is a USSF "D & E" Coaching License Instructor.
A native of Winston Salem, N.C., Newsome played collegiate soccer at Mars Hill College in North Carolina. There he was a four year starter and received his Bachelor's degree in Physical Education in 1997.
Newsome's head coaching experience began 1997, when he was the boys' varsity soccer coach at Enka High School in Ashville, N.C. After a year he became the boys' and girls' varsity soccer coach at Madison High School in Marshall, N.C. where he remained until 1999.
Newsome is married to the former Jennifer Schommer, and the couple has two daughters, Mary Ryan and Leah, and a cat, Moe.
